Hi Tracey,
I would be very surprised if your dentist didn't give you copies of your records if you wanted them - but he may well charge you for this.
Your GP will give you copies of your records (or a summary depending on what you want) if you ask for them but again, most GPs will charge you for this. I posted a reply to this on another forum so I'm just going to copy it here as I'm too slack to type it out again!:
In terms of UK notes, immunisation records are worth bringing - esp for kids. If you have any sort of significant history - operation, regular medication etc etc it really is worth bringing a copy of your notes or a summary so your doctor here can see what's happened to you and what needs to happen now. What people tell me about their medical history and what's really the case (from their notes) are not uncommonly quite different!!! Doctors differ and this is just my personal opinion: I often find it useful to have at least a short summary of the medical notes. Pages and pages of handwritten GP notes over the past 30 years are NOT necessary and won't get looked at. Useful things are a summary of health conditions, operations, regular medication (present and even past sometimes), allergies and significant investigations that have taken place (so that you won't unnecessarily have them repeated), and copies of any letters to and from hospital consultants-clinics. Most UK GPs will charge for this as it is a service that is NOT funded by the NHS. Some GPs do not charge for this. It is entirely up to them. They are not being difficult if they do charge - it does take a significant amount of staff time to arrange this!
Hope that helps a bit
Madhu
