Please be careful how you tell your employers about moving to Australia. Nothing to do with Australia, but a friend of mine bought a property out in Spain 2 years ago, and she and her husband have now decided to sell up everything in the uk and give Spain a try (they have jobs lined up if they want them). They have put their property on the market and are awaiting a buyer. Friend went into work one day, and her boss called her into the office - he was upgrading her car to a lovely new one (the previous one was great - she is a sales rep), and they gave her somesort of fancy new mobile phone, and raise in wages. Being as she has worked for this company for years, she thought it only polite to tell him of her plans to move to Spain as soon as the house was sold. He immediately took the new car keys off her, along with the new phone, and told her she wouldnt be getting the rise. In fact "you may as well go now" . She was absolutely gutted as the house hadnt sold yet (in fact 4 months down the line still not sold). He was very angry. She came home in tears.
Anyway, she then took legal advice, and spoke to the other chairman of the company, and she went back to work as they realised it was a bit harsh. Things are not the same (she still didnt get the new car or phone or rise, but at least she kept her job). the atmosphere at work is strained to say the least. So my advice for what its worth - be careful what you say to your employers - say its for years ahead perhaps, and you may not even decide then? I shouldnt imagine someone is going to promote you if they think you are leaving in the near future. Anyway, just a thought. Jill
