Does anyone on this group know if Terri Irwin (Steve's widow) is a citizen of Australia?
This question came up while I was researching some updates to the Wikipedia articles about the Irwins and their zoo. I had buttumed, up till now, that Terri probably had become an Australian citizen (i.e., a dual US-Oz citizen) at some point in time. However, I ran into some stuff that makes me much less sure about this.
Terri was awarded the Order of Australia earlier this year (2006) -- but a search of the "It's an Honour" web site her case was "honorary" -- generally meaning the recipient is not a citizen.
Further, an article on the Australia Zoo site, talking about Terri's award, said: "As an American citizen the award was honorary, but Mrs Irwin said it made her feel like a 'true Aussie'."
If Terri has not in fact acquired Australian citizenship, I'd be a bit curious to find out why. I imagine it could be because of the widely held misconception that US law forbids dual citizenship -- but given all the publicity a couple of years ago when Australia repealed the old law about foreign naturalization causing loss of Aussie citizenship, I would have thought that most people in Oz today would be more aware of dual citizenship issues in general. (Maybe not?)
