It is my impressiong that BS is a private organization; so, as such, if they're not receiving public funding, they can BE as bigoted and homophobic as they desire, no?
(edit)
So what's the problem? BS is still out there, but boys may not be signing on as readily as they once did, I suppose, if the organization has a lesser reputation today.
Since I'm an agnostic, I don't really see what God has to do with choosing to keep physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. You either HAVE a moral code or you don't whether or not you believe in a diety. But, BS are a private organization, so ...as I have suggested, as long as they don't accept public money, they can be as supersticious as they like.
If a young boy or girl, at a very impressionable time in life, is
I can' speak for your community, but mine is composed of all kinds of people, including atheists, homoloveuals, agnostics, etc. So, having a moral code that would reflect the community would require making policy decisions that also reflect the community. So, I guess my answer would have to be NO.
But, didn't you just say you WANTED BS to reflect the community? Are you suggesting there are no gays in the community? Where do you live, Mars!
Sally Ride was not admitted to BOY SCOUTS (funded my some major religions) because she's female. Spielberg's The Color Purple contains lesbian scenes, so apparently he isn't as put off by homoloveuality as you might have him look. Bill Gates showed his support of the homoloveual part of the community when he first contemplated domestic partners benefits, so I doubt he'd be supportive of a bigoted BSA. And, didn't Sam Walton (or his worker bees) pull a shirt from his store that said "Girls can Be President"
Like what?
Good of you to admit that the ACLU can razzle-dazzle 'em. :-) And yes, progress is generally a good thing as well, especially when it results in greater human civil rights.
The definition of marriage has not changed a whit...now it just pertains to everybody and not just the group YOU THINK should have the right to marry.
Scouts are being left alone unless they take public money or perform some unconsbreastutional activity. IN fact, they're probably going to find themselves more 'alone' than ever before. :-)
