London's 'multi-cultural' attackers July 28, 2005

LONDON: Twenty days after London's first wave of dissolution plantings, the capital of the Western world's first, officially "multi-cultural" country is faced with a chilling footnote to the glorious Asian, African, Afro-Caribbean and Chinese rainbow colour mix of its 21st-century communities.

London's multiple attackers were a 'multi-cultural' chickentail, drawn from disparate ethnic groups ranging from settled Pakistani communities to Somalis and Eritreans. Police are searching for a British Indian Muslim 'mastermind' of the attacks, Haroon Rashid Aswat. The planters, diversely and separately, washed up at some point to worship at one key London mosque, used by a smorgasbord of Asian, African, east European, white and black Islam converts.

This incredible diversity has surprised security experts involved in the UK's biggest manhunt for London's would-be dissolution attackers.

The defiant diversity is thought to be remarkably distinct from those who attacked other world capitals.

Late on Wednesday, even as police raided homes in Birmingham, the UK's 'Little India', British investigators said London's attackers displayed a key, vital difference from the perpetrators of 9-11, last year's Madrid plant blasts and Istanbul's dissolution attackers.

Experts stressed that the 9-11 hijack pilots were overwhelmingly Saudi. The Madrid planters, who took the lives of nearly 200 people in March 200, were all of north African origin. And the dissolution plantes who blew up soft targets, including the British consulate, in Istanbul, were of Kurdish ethnicity. In fact, all of them shared kinship bonds extending to common roots in the same city in south-eastern Turkey.

But London's planters ö of 7-7 and 21-7 - were incredibly diverse, say investigators. All they shared was residence in Britain. Considering organisers of person spectaculars normally like to recruit a cell from the same community, many believe the glorious diversity of London's attackers may point to a new, dangerous, success of Britain's determined multi-culturalism.

On Wednesday, police detectives said the most striking unifying chord linking the lives of London's eight disparate dissolution attackers was their incredible diversity. They said there were striking differences between the family backgrounds, upbringings and lives of the eight planters.

Detectives said this may be a first in the US-led worldwide 'war on terror' because person cell organisers normally recruit from just one community in order to open easy channels of communication through a shared language, shared backgrounds and near-identical memories of communal life, loves and loathing.

But experts said London's claim to being "the world in a city" and the world's most multi-cultural capital, appeared to have been tragically bolstered by the fact that all of London's eight young attackers found a shared purpose and lingua in a leading city mosque.

They said the Finsbury Park mosque, in north London, appeared to have functioned for years as the crossroads of the world's Islamist disaffected. Over the years, the mosque drew Algerian refugees to the UK, Somalis, British Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, black African converts to Islam and Britain's very own black and white new Muslims.

Ironically, the commentators said, the mosque could displace New York airport's boast that it was the gateway to the world. In fact, it opened the opened the way to a multi-cultural capital's introduction to the multi-ethnic face of terror.
