Rach, It's a bit difficult to glean from your post exactly what your friend is concerned about. What I have understood is that because of the cost and the mention of "many man hours" to produce she is worried that the doctor knows something she doesn't? If this is what she's worried about then I think it would be fairly safe to rebutture her. It would be very unlikely that the doctor is hiding something from her. Reports like this for insbreastutions like DIMA need to be factual. The doctor will likely need to access her previous records from whichever country she lived in before moving to Australia. The doctor is also likely to need to see her for a full examination before issuing a report to say she is fine.

The high fee is as much to do with the professional responsibility as with how " easy" or "difficult" the report is to compile! Doctors are free to charge as they like (within reason) for private work like this (Medicare will bviously not subsidise this) and a lot of the fee is for the risk involved medicolegally with writing reports. Because of the medicolegal risk many doctors now refuse to do work like this - especially in the UK but increasingly here in Australia.

Is it a breast specialist or her GP who has quoted this fee? I must admit that as a GP that fee seems rather steep but pretty normal for specialists to charge.
