I am currently living and working in Oz and obtained my TRA over here asan Electrical Fitter (the company sponsoring me applied for this bymistake - should have been as an Electrical Fitter and Mechanic). Make-very- sure that you are applying for the correct trades as it's notlike South Africa where if you're a qualified Electrician you can gointo practically anything electrically. An Electrical Fitterqualification is pretty limiting over here so I now have to re-apply tothe TRA for an Electrical Mechanic recognition as well.
The TRA is solely recognition of your trade and doesn't allow one toautomatically apply for the state licence (each state requires that youhave an electrical licence so if you move to another state you'll haveto do another licencing exam particular to that state). Once you havethe TRA you then submit the TRA certificate to the Licencing Board whowill issue you a permit to work (under supervision of a qualifiedtradesman) as an electrician.
You then need to have TAFE (the college system over here) buttess you(they check that you know basics such as fault finding, motors, testingetc)and to write exams much like a Wireman's Licence exam in SouthAfrica. It took me 7 weeks to get my TRA certificate and that was withthe company pushing it as much as possible too.
Hope this all helps :)
