Hi, I got my Pros Marriage Visa back in May 2003, and even then it was clearly 9 months from the grant of the visa,to do the lot - ie move to Australia, marry, and apply for the temp residence visa. This hasn't changed. The meds and police checks are both valid for 12 months, so if you are lucky they are still valid when you apply for your Temp residence; otherwise you will have to do them again. They MUST be valid when you enter Australia, and your "first entry date" is set by the one that was done first.
So - my visa was granted in May; I had until February to enter, marry, and lodge the next stage; BUT I HAD to actually enter the country before Jan 21st - the day my police check expired.
If you are not planning to marry till Oct 2006, I would say, yes this is too early. to apply. Remember you need to leave about a month after the wedding to allow time to file the papers - it can be done quicker, but you need to get Stat Decs, and you need to apply to the Registrar for a copy of the Marriage cert, which takes a couple of weeks at least. I would suggest something like applying in March - then if its granted in a couple of weeks, you still have till December to do everything; if it takes longer and doesn't come through till, say, June, (unlikely) you still have plenty of time.
