Thanks for posting this. We are going to be making our validation trip to Melbourne in Feb 2006 and are really looking forward to it. I didn't realize you could apply for Medicare ahead of actually taking up residence in Australia, so that's a good tip as I was not planning on doing that. Anything else you would recommend doing? I don't think you can get a TFN or anything like that, but what about opening bank accounts?
As for the customs thing with food, I'm quite surprise about you getting grief over your taking pre-packaged chocolates into the country. When we went over back in 2003 for a trip we had no such problems. We had a bunch of packaged "snack food" for our 18 month old toddler with us and they didn't even blink. The only thing they asked us to trash was the half full carton of milk we got on the Qantas flight from LA to Sydney. I thought that was funny as I thought it might have been considered "local", but it turned out to have been supplied from a US food services company in LA and hence was contraband! They told us that processed-packaged foods were usually fine to bring in. Live and learn!
