I had my stuff shipped from Beantown (Boston) to Sydney in October of 2003.
I did the initial research on the internet, then called up the individual companies. The prices varied a lot, so did the insurance details.
I didn't use a container, they charged me by the cubic feet instead.
I used a service called "Door to Door" delivery. That way, they pick it up from your doorstep in US, and deliver it directly to your address in Sydney.
You can also have it stored and held in Sydney (by the shipping company handling your goods in Sydney), until you are set up with your home in Sydney. That may cost an additional storage charge, but is not that much, and is still cheaper. The "Door to Door" delivery is still covered in that case.

That's what we did.
The US company usually contracts out the Sydney side of the job to an Australian Shipping company. You should get the contact details of the Australian company from your shipper in the US, and contact the Australian company directly to get all the details. This could include details and documentation for Australian customs as well.
Finally, clear out (confirm by email or writing) the details of the shipping contract and insurance with your US shipper, and read the fine lines.
We had all the stuff arrive from the US with nothing missing or broken. Australian Customs did rearrange them a bit to do their job.
