Hi,
Its doubtful you'll even see a snake in suburbia, to be honest. I've lived in Australia my whole life, and have only seen a live, wild snake once, and it was in the long grbuttlands of a park-reserve (who's rangers knew about the snakes there, plus, it "ran" faster away from us than we did from it!) Basically, we went out almost 'looking' for it.

The main thing is to keep the area around your house clear from corrugated iron, junk, long grbutt, old cars etc.. keep the mice out in the same method, and you won't have a snake problem.
If you ever actually saw a snake, there are things you can do. Firstly, you can't hurt or kill it. They are protected by law, just like all our native plants and animals. There are snake catchers (in the phone book) that will come to your house and remove the snake for you and put it back where it belongs. The main thing there is someone keeping their eye on the snake whilst the phone call is being made. ;)
Another thing - do some research on the net about them. I don't mean the hyped-up scare sites, either. The more you know, the better you'll feel about living "with" them in Australia. For example:
