Hi Daryl
They have to provide a bond of approx å£2.5k per couple and earn more than approx $40k to be an butturer. To be a sponsor they need to be a blood relative of you or your spouse. Both sponsor and butturer need to be Australian residents
The butturer and sponsor do not need to be the same person and the butturer does not need to be related to you.
The butturer will be called into an interview with CentreLink and to ensure that they understand their obligations and that they will have to support you if you become desbreastute. If they satisfy this bit and earn enough (two year tax returns required), they get to pay the bond which is held for two years. We will provide the money for this bit.
We approached this by asking what we would do if the situation was reversed and one of my cousins asked me to sponsor him to the UK. Thinking about it this way made me less nervous about asking. However we knew each other and had met before. I also asked by email to give them time to think about it.

However if you don't have a relationship with them there is nothing to ruin by asking! We also did it by by saying this was not our only option (even thought it was!) so as not to put pressure on them.
Be prepared however for this not to be as important to them as it is to you. Work issues intervened with my slightly disorganised cousin and delayed our visa application for two months. Also for lots of running around with original certificates proving family relationships.
Good luck Scotty
