Hi I was thinking the same thing so i emailed the ATO,
"What is a Tax File Number (TFN)?
A TFN is a unique number issued by the Tax Office.
Only one TFN is issued to you for your lifetime.
Once a TFN has been issued to you, there is no need to reapply for one if your circumstances change - for example, if you move interstate, change jobs, change your name in any way, have investments, or claim government benefits.
If you have a TFN with the incorrect residency status registered and:
- will not be submitting any correspondence to the Tax Office in the near future, or - would like your residency status changed as soon as possible
Then you can write a letter addressed to:
Registrations - Individuals PO Box 9942 Moonee Ponds VIC 3039
This letter should contain your personal details, including
- name - postal address - daytime telephone number - date of birth, and - the reasons why you wish to change your residency status
Please note that you will not receive a written response to your letter, however if you want to check that it has been processed you can call the Personal Tax Infoline.
If you need to contact the Tax Office from overseas, please ring +61 13 2861 between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday, Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). If you are unable to contact the Tax Office by dialling +61 13 2861, please ring +61 2 6216 1111 between 8.00am and 5.00pm AEST.
Thank-you for your enquiry. "
