I posted this message on Australia-Life & Styles. Jeremy suggested that I should post this on Immigration. So here I am.
A seasoned Professional Civil Engineer of USA is planning to join a firm in Australia on 457. At age above 50, is it worth migrating? All comments, helps, and tips are welcome and appreciated.
A reply from Jeremy
You can't 'migrate' on a 457 visa. It's only temporary residence and you'll have to go home at some stage. Plus, there are other problems and hbuttles with the 457.
Have you thought of getting sponsored for a permanent visa through ENS or RSMS? As you're over 45 the age limit will need to be waived by DIMIA but there are processes for this. It may depend on just how far above 50 you are.
It won't be straightforward to get permanent residence so you really need to get some good professional advice. Choose well, as not all agents know much about employer nominated visas.
You'll probably get more responses if you post on the immigration forum.

My Thanks to Jeremy
Thanks Jeremy. 457 is not approved as of today. An experienced Australian agent is working on it. My plan is to explore options of getting an ENS-RSMS once I am physically present there, and then try for PR. Is it feasible-practical? I will certainly discuss with my agent soon.
So far based on what I have read, it is a big challenge. Although I am always on for challenges, I am 51, and the only thing that I am worried about is that will it be too late to get a PR, and settle?
Another concern is that I am not pessimistic about getting a job back home when I return, albeit lesser salary than what I am getting now.
I appreciate your help-comment.
