Hi there, My name is Paul and I thought I would just introduce myself. Having just returned from a month's holiday in Perth (WA) visiting my brother (who was also a...

I use a Nationwide credit card specifically because it doesn't charge a fee for spending in a foreign currency. I realise that the credit card uses the interbank rate, which is significantly better than the rate that the DIMIA currency converter uses (approx 2.5 compared to 2.3)

I will be paying in the UK, by whatever means. The DIMIA website instructs applicants to use the currency converter on its website to calculate the fee ( AUD 1340) into the local currency, and then pay in the local currency. My problem is that the currency converter rate is pathetic and if I was allowed to pay in AUD it would be a large saving. However, I am not sure if this is permitted.

I figure I'll have to bite the bullet and use the standard payment method, but it leaves a nasty taste. It seems like one more rip-off in an already expensive process.

Thanks for this advice Tuxtrip. I looked into it but it seems like the Australian High Commission in London only accept credit and debit cards.

I will be applying in London. Unfortunately The currency conversion rate is not determined by the credit card company, because I am obliged to pay in GBP, apparently

And don't call me Shirley ;)

By the way, I've found your Go Matilda forum very useful.
