When I decided to get a dog I spent every weekend scouring all the animal shelters nearby. I had a list of breeds that would be good for me and breeds that would not be so good. Most herding, hunting or retrieving dogs were out, no terriers or labs or border collies. No dogs that needed to 'work', I knew I couldn't keep them busy enough to be happy and a bored dog is a destructive dog. I knew labs were really hard, they're kind of dopey and need to be kept busy and they have big chewy jaws.
Sadly, a lot of people didn't know that and the shelters were full of year old lab puppies. Still puppies but in almost full sized bodies, they'd reached their full destructive potential and card after card listed "owner did not have time for pet" or "dog too destructive in house". It made me feel awful to see these beautiful dogs in this situation, dogs that NEEDED to work and couldn't and found the exact wrong outlet for their energy. I wanted to take them all home but no matter what I stuck to my list and ended up with my Ghengis, a dachshund/shar-pei mix and later Maddie, a shar-pei and they are the perfect dogs for me.
