Being sick for a few weeks, we hadn't yet gotten a tree or decorated or anything of the sort...and worse yet, I hadn't even begun any of my holiday cooking. So, needless to say, I wasn't feeling much in the holiday spirit. Then yesterday, because we were both feeling a wee bit better and because it was such a completely lovely afternoon, my dear man suggested we gather the young'uns and fetch ourselves a tree. Of course, being a man from Southern California, he didn't phrase it quite that way. We did just that, and it was our good fortune to find a beautiful specimen in a very short time. We loaded it up in the truck and headed home. I tell you, even before it was all a-twinkle with pretty little lights, that tree did wonders for my Christmas spirit, and my mood in general. I got to work making the noodles for the pot of stock I'd been simmering all day and dined beside the tree, smiling and feeling better than I'd felt in a long while.
Today, I even felt well enough to get the lights on the tree, and add a few more decorations about the house. I found some very beautiful Christmas lights I forgot I had. They're the shape we all remember from childhood, except the surface looks like cut crystal, so they shimmer when they're lit. Very pretty. And they look lovely strung across the entryway to the dining room.
The final step in my Christmas awakening this last 24 or so hours: Every year, Sea World Marina, where our boat is, has a holiday party to coincide with the San Diego Yacht Club's Parade of Lights. It's really lovely watching the boats go by all decked out with lights and snowmen, Santas and reindeer, snowflakes and trees. And the fresh air did us good.
