I have an almost fool proof way of knowing if I'll like a (red) wine, by its label, at the lower end of the price range (£3 to £7) - What does the label...

Thanks, Paul. In the early 70's there was a book which I studied well (because I knew nothing about purchasing wine), enbreastled "How to read a wine label." It's probably still in print in a later edition. Though simple to me now, it was a beginning education. DH and I have a good time choosing wine. As for instance when we went to Baltimore about 6 weeks ago and found a Italian grocer selling some Italian wines. He didn't have a lot, but every bottle he knew a lot about (so he said -- tee hee), and we really enjoyed buying from him and drinking 'his' recommendations. I can't count how many women I've known that are really down on alcohol who've taken a trip 'abroad' and came back extolling the virtues of wine. Often wine increases the enjoyment of life at any economic level. It's hard not to take people's recommendation when they are so enthusiastic. The last time we did that was when we were looking at some wines and a guy who 'looked as if' he might know something about wine, recommended a wine, which was horrid. But we got a big laugh out of our gullibility. We usually don't punish ourselves and drink a bottle we don't like -- down it goes; It's hard -- but that's the price of experimentation. Almost every bottle is just that -- experimentation. Dee Dee
