Certainly, I can hope. But like I said, I'm not optimistic. Right now, for instance, the big bandwidth providers are essentially trying double charge heavy users like google and yahoo. But, their real goal it to completely privatize the net. If this happens, every little move you make on the net will be billed. Each piece of email. Each hit on a web page. Each click on a link. Penny by penny, dollar by dollar, you will be charged. The technology has been here for years, in the wings, just waiting to be rolled out. Businesses have tried to digitize and copyright whole databases in the public domain, so you will have to pay for access. Copyrights have been extended from 15 years of origin to 75 yrs after the author's rest. Yes, it is a great resource, but big business wants own and commoditize and charge for every spec of it. No free ride.
There's some Congressmen who are speaking out, rallying against this takeover of this publicly developed and taxpayer funded resource, but how long can they prevail against big money? You, the user must take a stand on this issue. Start by educating yourselves. Learn about the Open Source Software movement and political issues involving the internet.
