A couple of weeks ago in the NYT Food Section there was a blip about a cookbook for Death Food. It was a fundraiser for a historic cemetary in Virginia and the whole basis, besides good food recipes, was to shed light on food related death rituals. This popped into mind when only Wayne knew about raisin pie at a funeral. I was raised thinking that they couldn't bury someone unless there was a 'funeral pie' at the bereaved's home. (Strange what people put in kids heads).

I happened to catch the Food Network show the Deen boys for the first time last night. For synchronicity, they happened to be in Missouri. They visited...

Is there anything particular to your area of the world/country that you relate to a funeral? When my hub's relatives started pbutting a few years ago, the family was feted at a buffet at a local establishment (caterer at the firehall sort of thing). Growing up down South (NC), everyone started cooking at the advent of the death and dropped food off at the home of the immediate family who opened the doors to the rest of the friends/family after the funeral. There was ALWAYS more than enough food. Now, I make a refridgerated tuna/noodle salad and drop off at the home, somes it is met with surprise, so the immediate family will have something to nosh in the middle of the night when they finally realize they must eat.

Your thoughts? -ginny
