Emergency supper

My wife's granddaughter (4 years old and not a gourmet at all) is going to be here in about 5 minutes for the night as her mother is in another city with a raging fever.

Betty bought a 4 elbee chicken and we already had leeks, cranberries which we had not used from Thanksgiving (the real one) and which I cooked with 1 cup fructose and a chunk of finely chopped ginger. I will add 2 tbsp. of lemon juice.

The chicken, we realized could not be done in the oven as the oven for some reason decided to stop working. Not having time to question this profoundly, I pulled out the crockpot, tossed in some small carrots, halved small potatoes and a head of leek cut lengthwise. I stuffed some of the leek into the chicken and spread the rest about the bottom with sliced sage from the remainder of the garden. I am cooking it on high with 1 cup of red wine, so it should be ready around 6.

At the same time I am cooking about eight largish beets to have handy for the next few days because I really miss having my urine run red ;-) Actually, they're great hot with a dab of butter and a pinch of salt, or cold with mayo. Yum yum.

Tonight's mood music will be Cesaria Evora or Jorane. Kid's here, got to go.
