I've been in retail/customer service, it's TOUGH, e.g. hard work for little pay and so I hated it. But when someone was even remotely civil or polite to me it'd make my day, I'd go out of my way for them. I just don't understand employees who are nasty to customers who are POLITE to them...

A few years back there was a similar cashier at Treasure Island, she RADIATED hostility. People were actually scared to get in her line...I once said to her, "I politely asked for a big shopping bag, is it any reason to get so hostile?". She's no longer there...
I can't think of anything LESS unpleasant than coming back to a store to get a refund on an item I was overcharged for. Some shady retail operators realise this I guess and make a little profit, "Oh, they won't bother to come back for a small amount..."

In exasperation I said to one of the guys, "Don't you think I have better things to do than come here and be treated like a liar?". The nice deli guy did say to me, "If you have any problems in the future, come to me, I'll take care of you...".
I think the best strategy is to come in on a weekday day shift, you get the older more experienced staff. Nights and weekends they've got the riff - raff working...
at some
We had a lunch at Sun Wah, a Chinese BBQ place that BLEW ME AWAY. They have a kitchen up front with whole ducks and chickens and stuff hanging in the window (once I saw a giant smoked SQUID).. I'd once gotten a whole BBQ duck there before for a picnic (it runs $11.50 for a whole duck) but had never eaten in their dining room before. My friend D and I took a table and ordered egg rolls, a small BBQ combo plate (chicken, duck, pork) and an order each of Lo Mein noodles with BBQ pork and some veg. I'm looking at the prices and thinking, "Oh, it's like $4.75 for each dish, these must be appetizer - size...". WRONG! The "small" meat combo plate must have been close to a pound, the Lo Mein plates were HUGE, we had enough food for about four people so we had some to take home. Total bill w/two beers was a little over $20.00. Now THAT is my style, I'm impressed. They have a huge menu, all kinds of interesting soups and noodles and even rice congee (porridge); whole roast pig, fried pig intestines, beef tripe. When you order wonton soup they make the wontons FRESH for each order. That BBQ pork was to DIE for; I am getting a BBQ duck next week or so to make duck gumbo with....seriously that BBQ pork is "Death Row last meal" food :-)
There is a funny, opinionated waitress there who will be honest and tell you what's good that day, what's not so hot. You can tell her, "I'm hungry for this and this and this, bring us what you think is good..." If you order something she doesn't "approve" of, she'll say, "Think again"...
college student 5136You missunderstood , the poster wants US to offer ideas in cooking ware and fundamentals . You know , like the chicken...
They have posted daily specials, interesting stuff like lamb stew, whole red snapper, shrimp with walnuts. A coupla specials are in Chinese only, they are apparently things like duck tongues, etc...
Some local Chicawgo gourmands have a big thread on the place on this forum (check out the many great pics, that glistening pic of pork is true FOOD love; also check out the pic of Shrimp Wonton Soup w/egg noodle and roast duck - YUM!)...

Convection Oven installedWell, I couldn't wait to use it and the kids suggested chocolate chip cookies as a good test. haha...
I tell ya, if I lived nearer I'd pick something up from there every day, it's actually more expensive to cook. Unfortunately, no delivery, but ifor me t's about a 20 - minute bus ride:

Sun Wah BBQ Restaurant 1132 W. Argyle St. Chicago IL 60640 773-769-1254
This stretch of Argyle St. is called "Little Saigon" or "Chinatown North", all kinds of Viet pho places, oriental bakeries, Thai and Chinese joints, food stores. Very cheap, very authentic...everything from tiny holes in the wall (One place advertises, "Checking account. Package forwarding. Wholesale rice..."} to a big shiny Asian (Viet - owned) soopermart where you can buy fresh Dungeness crabs, etc...
Afterward we went to the Thai Grocery (corner of B'way and Argyle). Tiny place, jammed with victuals, including a hot take - out counter in the back.. Got a bunch of sauces and stuff for about half the price I'd pay here in Yuppieville (an endearing hand - lettered sign above the fresh herb/chili section sez "Chaper if you by more!"). Owner and his wife asked "Oh, what are you making? You need any recipes or...???". And this when they were very busy, now that's service. Got some neat little Thai eggplants, bird chilis, lemon basil, long beans. Sounds like I'll be making a chicken curry - ish thing tonight or so...
Homemade Veggie Beef SoupWhy would you use barley ?!! could it be that it creates more MALTOSE from its starch than any other starchy...
Then ambled few blocks down (lovely sunny crisp October day) to the famous Green Mill Tavern, an authentic joint opened in 1915 and once frequented by Al Capone. It's a live jazz spot at night. D had once worked there and she knew the folks in there, we got a free round of drinks (call drinks were $3.50!). Plus which where can you find a jukebox with Charlie Barnet, June Christy, Harry James, Art Tatum, and Jo Stafford...??? Pretty neat...
So a good day, my faith in mankind is (somewhat a little) restored :-)
