(atheists understand it perfectly well - you are the guys who are in dispute with each other over its meaning) Thomas was a good jew - he followed jewish tradition and he believed in the jewish God. He desided to follow Jesus, and was told that Jesus was the Son of God and would rise after his rest. Following the crucifixion - he refused to believe that Christ had risen from the dead until he saw him with his own eyes. This did not detract from his faith in God - it detracted from his faith in Jesus.
