On the topic of the poor, quite often they have to turn to food banks. Someone mentioned it's too bad the food banks can't take homecanned goods, sorry I forgot who since the coffee isn't working yet. No they won't take homecanned foods. Ours won't take fresh produce either which is too bad as many have some type of vegetable gardens here and there are a lot of farms and orchards. A lot of the surplus fruits and vegetables end up going to waste or are plowed under. If you look at a lot of the foods donated to the food bank it tends to be things like Hamburg Helper et al, KD, Rice a Roni, cake mixes, pasta, tomato sauce and canned goods. Most of the canned goods tend to be soups or vegetables. What I would consider real food like dried beans, rice, milk, tuna, meats, fish, and fresh veggies are sadly absent. So are things like spices, sugar, salt, and flour. I know food banks are supposed to be for emergency situations but some families get by on only food bank offerings which to me appear to be high starch filler foods. It's better than nothing but still it really does encourage the eating of this type of food. BTW, if you have a garden and have surplus fruits or veggies, it is nice to give it to someone in need but at least here you have to do it directly.
