Food and Dinining: Huntsville, Alabama 4265

Hi Jill and all!

I wish I'd known that you were coming to town Jill, I could have told you where the fun restaurants are.

Potates au gratin and sauteed cabbage with photos
My first attempt at photographing food (other than Birthday cakes...) These are two dishes I make fairly frequently, although not so often for the potates as they are...

Huntsville is, by and large, an engineering town and that's why we have so many chain restaurants. Most of the engineers down here want the same food that they could get in Palo Alto, Dallas, Seattle, etc, etc. It's very boring unless you know where the ethnic/privately owned restaurants are. Close to where SD is staying (and where I was talking about before) is Jordan Lane. Jordan Lane between University Drive and Interstate 565 is FULL of fun ethnic restaurants. There are two Korean (one where you can BBQ at the table but the other one is better), two Indian, one Middle Eastern/coffee shop, one German (good from what I understand but I've never been there) one good sub shop, one good Cajun place, one good wings joint, a "Chinese" buffet that serves pretty good sushi where you can even talk them in sashimi if you tip 'em. Oh yeah, there's also a Krystal (you have to try one, just to say you did. It's even better at 3am after drinking if you can manage that), a Burger King and a Subway. All these places and probably a few that I've forgotten w/in walking distance from the dorms where SD will be staying. It's quite a walk, but no more than a mile or two.

I moved here from DC years ago and we didn't have much in the way of interesting restaurants but it's way better now. We also have the highest per capita income in the Southeastern US, the second largest number of PhDs per capita in the US (behind Austin), not many folks have much more than a 20 minute commute (if that. Mine was always about 7 minutes), really low property taxes and the cost of housing is truly amazing right now. Mind you, we are getting an influx of about 5000 new people from buttorted base closings so that may change soon.

Quinces
Old Mother Ashby Mainly quince paste, always served with a cheese platter. QUINCE PASTE (Membrillate) 1 pound quinces...

We're even getting more open minded (it's a relative term here). I threw a fundraiser ( Dining with Friends) for our local AIDS Service Organization (ASO) last Saturday and we had about 100 ppl here. Good food (more on that later if anyone is interested), good booze, good DJ. We raised about $5K which isn't too bad for only the second year of throwing this party. There will be 63 other DWF fundraisers around the 12 N. Alabama counties and hopefully we'll make up for the $100K that was cut from the damn budget of

Anyway, that's probably more than anyone wanted to know about me, our ASO or Huntsville!

helen I
