Cleaver creatures those racoons. We had an experience with then in a cabin where were staying up north. We had taken along some goodies in one of those old metal pails with the the tabs that fold over to keep them sealed (haven't seen those things in years). My newly acquired mother in law had sent the stuff along for chickentail party goodies. It included a jar of marinated mushrooms. "beer cheese" (tasted like really old cheddar with horse radish in it), cans of smoked oysters, cheese crackers, a tin of biscuits. and some other cheeses.
We came back to the cabin just after sundown and heard the cabin door open and close as we neared it. I spotted one of the coons making his getaway. They had managed to open up the pail. They ate just about everything they could get into. Jars and cans had been tossed under the double bed in the corner. There was a paw print in one of the packages of beer cheese. II guess they didn't like it because the one the sampled and the unopened one were both under the bed with the cans and jars. They ate one package of cheese wafers and ran off with the other.

They must have been able to read to know what was in the can that said Biscuits for Cheese. They were in a tin biscuit can with cellophane tape around the lip and a cellophane wrapper around the can. They got some of the tape off that. If I had left a can opener the little buggers probably would have opened the cans too.
