Years ago I worked at a place where there were several "gift donation" things for a woman who was continually having out - of - wedlock kids by different fathers (she was making minimum wage, had all kinds of "welfare" benefits, e.g WIC, food stamps, Section 8 housing, etc.) After being hit up the first time, I replied when hit up the second time, "I'll be glad to make a donation in love's name to Planned Parenthood..."

They didn't bother me again :-)

I've given plenty of money to those in need, and I've even helped organise fund - raisers for them. I'll give to folx who have genuine need, e.g. they've had an illness, etc. But I won't buy candy, etc. from parents who are doing their kiddies' fund - raising work for them. I won't fund someone's lazy childbearing lifestyle, or give to "adopted" families who have a list of expensive Christmas gift items they want ("I want an World...I want a cashmere sweater..."). There are real needs out there and these AIN'T it...

The most ridiculous one was that the boss was getting married to another employee. They had plenty of money (paid WAY more than us peons, they were on nice expense accounts while we were eating generic mac 'n cheeze...), came from money, and were planning a dee - luxe wizz - bang wedding. The employees were asked to chip in for an expensive gift. I declined when I asked, "Are we employees who donate going to be invited?" and was told "Of course not, why would you be?". Hey if I'm asked to donate for a wedding gift I at least want to be invited to the reception so's I can recoup my $$$ by being able to drink and eat for free ;--)

Oh, and did I mention that the boss was a jerk, too...???
