Some people just won't take no for an answer, so we can be grateful that we have aged enough to resist giving in. I was able to resist the invitation of my late brother in law's exwife when she threw herself a 65th birthday party. If she had had it at home I would have gone. It is only an hour drive from here and we would have found something to do in the city to make the trip worthwhile. Instead, she the party was to be held at the cottage, and that is at least 4 1-2 hours by car, each way. Sorry, but I have two dogs who were not invited and had no one to check on them for me even if I did want to spend 9 hours driving back and forth to a party that could have been held at a more convenient location.
I also resisted numerous pleas to attend a nephew's wedding. The bride and groom both live here in Canada, same province. Groom's parents live near here and bride's mother lives about an hour away. I would have made a weekend of it. But a childhood dream of being married at the grandmother's farm .....in Portugal. Sorry, but I am not spending close thousands of dollars on air fare, hotels, car rentals etc to go all the way over there to attend a wedding that could have been held here.
Apparently this is becoming quite common these days. Rather than spending $30,000 or more on lavish weddings, couples are taking off to the Caribbean or elsewhere and having smaller venue weddings. That is fine for the couple or the parents who are paying for the reception, but it's hell on the guests. The latest one I heard of is being done on a cruise ship. So each guest will be expected to get him or herself to the point of departure and pay for the cruise.
