The propane under pressure is NOT very cold (except when it is getting filled). By the time you've been using it for awhile and are wondering about the level of liquid left in the...

Seems like a good story to introduce myself with since it displays my own clumisiness even though I know better and has bearing on a recent thread:

I was preparing potatoes to fry with my mandolin but you know how it so hard to start potatoes going with the guard so I started the first potato by hand and then switched to the quard to finish it off. Then the next one but before I could switch to the guard DD #2 came in and in the commotion I just kept on slicing and didn't even notice that the tip of my finger had joined the potatoes on the plate (eww) until DD #3 screamed.

Knowing the usual wait at our local (Pacific NW about 30 minutes from Vancouver, BC in the US) emergency room I decided to apply pressure and hold my arm over my head. After a half an hour and increasingly hysterical DDs with no noticible decrease in blood gushing, I agreed to go to the emergency room.

This was a week day, early evening (not a rush time in other words) and after 4 hours during which we had been given bandages to soak up the blood that was still flowing freely we were seen. I was given a shot for the pain and a clotting material plus bandage. Time seen by professionals = 10 min.at most. Time in emergency department = 5 hours. Cost = nearly $1000.

I admit it was not life threatening but jeeze! Next time, I'll apply my own bandages. And if I even use the mandolin again (it's been 6 months and my knife skills have never been better) I'll use the damn guard from the first.

Also, the triage nurse was very confused when I told her I did it on a mandolin. She couldn't figure out how a musical instrument cut off my finger!

Blessings, Ann
