A bit too late to be thinking we're just getting the point of absurdity NOW...but...
Two things wrong with the above analogy:
1. EXPERIENCED scientists might go ahead an do the experiment, you're right; but that's not analogous to the situation we're talking about here. And you definitely do NOT want science students just plowing ahead and "doing the experiment." (Consider, for example, the "gee, I wonder what happens if I drop this big hunk of sodium into the sink - since not much happened when I dropped the aluminum in..." scenario.) For an absolute beginner, asking questions of those more experienced, as opposed to just doing it, is very often the best AND most efficient path to more knowledge (and without losing limbs, in many fields of endeavour....).
2. I'd have to guess that you don't do a lot of science; the very first thing most scientists will do when a new thought enters their heads is to consult the literature, and perhaps discuss the idea with a few others in the field. They don't just fire up the turbo-retro- encabulating-cyclotron and start trying things out. That's especially true of "newbies" in any given field (per the above). And guess what? We, here, are the "literature" and the "others in the field" in this case.
