My prayers have been answered!
I'm a big soup fan, specially during Winter. While I know my fair share of basic soups, I sometimes lack imagination for more exotic soups or basic soups I've never prepared before. I'm also not real wild about all the too basic or dumbed down soup recipes one usually finds on the web. I prefer more complex renditions with plenty of herbs and spices. So, after a couple years of rejecting all the latest, trendiest, celebritiest soup cookbooks, I'd pretty much given up hope of finding a decent one. Yesterday, that all changed.
I was walking out of Border's bookstore when I took another look at the always-there stack of heavily discounted cookbooks and noticed an obscure cookbook breastled simply, SOUP. I thought what the Hell and grabbed it for a look-see. It's was on sale for $5.95. How good could it be? Whoa!!...
OT house pix for Wayne and others. 976On Wed, 7 Dec 2005 23:09:38 -0600, "Mike Pearce" Yeah, I know. And it's a shame. My live oak (that one, anyway -- there are some smaller ones out back by the fence line) lost...
Soup, Superb Ways with a Clbuttic Dish by Debrah Mayhew (isbn 0-681-60705-X) is just what I've been looking for all these years. Excellent renditions of clbuttic soups. Hot, cold, creams, bisques, chowders, etc. All well known standards, but all with that something extra, that extra fresh herb or ingredient that raises it above pedestrian. An excellent soup book for dirt cheap!
But wait, there's more! As I tucked my prize under my arm to head back to the purchase line, I spied another soup book: Best-Ever Soups by Anne Sheasby (isbn 10:0-681-28005-0). This one was on sale for just a couple bucks more so I didn't expect much more. But, holy crap!... Two hundred of some of the most exotic soup recipes I've ever run across. Yes, some old clbuttics, but also great fusion recipes from cuisines all over the world. Not just some yuppie eye candy with Eiffel Tower garnishes, but serious well thought out hearty soups. Serious chef recipes. I can't wait to try some of these.
I don't often buy cookbooks, preferring to just sneakily copy recipes I want right out of the book. But, in this case, what a bargain! Two person soup cookbooks for a mere $15. These are typical coffee table books with your basic time-life quality photos, too. I'm not usually one to shill books or retailers, but if you're looking for a good soup cookbook, I suggest getting your butt on down to Border's and snagging one (or both) of these jewels, if they still have them in stock. :)
