the whole having to ride a schoolbus vs. walking thing is a liability issue for the schools. statistically, kids are 'safer' on a bus than they are walking, particularly in suburban & semi-rural areas where there aren't any sidewalks. i'm not defending the forced bus riding, since i think it's stupid, but there are reasons why it's done. i started school in Rochester NY. i walked a mile to school, & sometimes home for lunch, daily. my walk involved crossing 490 (or 590, i forget which) over a foot bridge. according to my mom, i could have taken a schoolbus, but that would have required a one mile walk in the opposite direction, as busses didn't go door-to-door in the 60s. when i was in 2nd grade we moved to MA & lived 1/4 mile from the school. school officials told my mom we had to take a bus to get there, which would require standing on the corner of the main highway to Boston (pre=route 3). she refused & said we would walk through the field behind our house. they tried to frighten her with kidnappers & whatnot & finally made her sign a waiver allowing us to walk. pretty stupid really. when we moved again to Chelmsford, it was 5 miles to the school. mostly we took the bus, but i frequently walked home on nice days. lee -- Question with boldness even the existence of god; because if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear. - Thomas Jefferson
