Cincinnati chili ... its either like it or loathe it. I think alot of people make more out it than they should...

I just got back from a 3 month stay (work) in Tokyo. I've appended a little info I wrote up for someone in rec.travel.asia a couple of days ago. One thing I didn't mention was the bento box lunches that are sold on the streets and in parks near businesses and office parks. For 500 Yen you get a typical home-style Japanese salaryman lunch and the quality and quantity make them a very good buy.

In addition to the good info you've already received from others, take a look at

This website has an eclectic listing of various restaurants in and around Tokyo with descriptions, prices, addresses, and some photos.

No matter where you'll be staying, you'll probably want to familiarize yourself with the train system as Tokyo is a very large, spread out city and walking isn't always an option. It's hot and very humid this time of year too. The Yamanote line is a circular railway areound the city center and can get you near many interesting locations. The ticket machines can be pretty cryptic though. There are taxis everywhere too but of course can be pretty expensive after a while.

Rappongi, and Harajuku (Tokyo 90210) are interesting, lively areas. Teenagers head to Harajuku on the weekend dressed up in the most amazing costumes. Shinjuku near the train station can be interesting especially if you like to shop department stores or look at skyskrapers and there are a lot of restaurants especially on the west and south of the station. Be sure to take a look ate the food courts in the basements of the department stores like Odakyu or Takashimaya, they're amazing. Tokyo Hands is fun too. The electronics area with Bic Camera and Yodobashi Electronics and the various iPod and camera stores is a trip too but there are no bargains on electronics in Japan anymore.

My husband was born on the outskirts of Cincinnati and he still has many relatives in the Dayton area. Frozen Skyline chili not...

While at Takashimaya, look behind the store for the Kinokuniya bookstore. There is large English language section on the 7th floor. While there pick up the Tokyo City Atlas, approximately 2100 Yen (USD18 and change). It contains many well detailed maps of Tokyo devided into the various major areas.

I'm sorry if I was coming across as a jerk, which was not my intention. I have strong feelings about Cincinnati...
