Yeah, I know. And it's a shame.
My live oak (that one, anyway -- there are some smaller ones out back by the fence line) lost a major limb some time back and it's not healing well. I'm afraid it has some sort of infection. My parents live in Baton Rouge and at the place they used to have there was a huge old live oak. My father measured its girth once at 18 feet. As you say, quite impressive. I was sad to see them move out of that house, and that tree was a big reason why.
We have six pecan trees in the yard at present. We had seven, but I had one cut down because it was dropping leaves, pecans and limbs on the house. It was just too close. A big maple of some sort out back was hurt badly by the drought we've endured over the past few months (well over 30% down on moisture for the year) and I'll likely replace it with a pecan. It's fun to invite friends over to pick them up with us. Free food!
Fresh pecans are astonishing -- or can be, depending on the variety. One of our trees is a paper shell, and the nutmeat is a real disappointment to my palate. The smaller babies have considerably more flavor, even if getting to it is a bit of a chore.
I have to admit I prefer my pecans toasted a little and tossed with some chili powder.
