Outrageous Restaurant Behavior not about kids! WAS: Saw an odd thing

I confess I was scammed once when I worked in a restaurant. I was the hostess. This guy came in for lunch carrying a shopping bag and a newspaper. He was just a regular looking guy, you know - neatly dressed. He said he was waiting for his wife and kids who were still shopping at the store next to the restaurant and asked to be seated at a table for 6. I took him to the table, laid out the menus. The server went to his table. He asked for tea while he waited for his family. He waited and waited, I saw him stand up a couple of times and peer out the window by the table. Finally he had the server bring him an appetizer or something (not a full meal). A short while later he came over to me and said he was really getting worried about his wife/kids. Said he'd left all his stuff on the table, could he step outside and look for her? Well *DUH* bells should have gone off in my head, but they didn't. I mean, he was one hell of an actor! Of course he didn't come back and the shopping bag he left on the table just contained more newspaper.
