Ooh, my old stomping grounds. Here are some of my favorites. The higher-end choices are still not very expensive, because I have always been broke. :-) Steve Pope may have some better ideas about higher end stuff, or you could post in sdnet.eats, where you'll probably be able to find my more involved reviews of most of these places, come to think of it.

Low-budget:

First, get yourself to Pokez (pronounced Pokey's). Ultra-cheap (we've had dinner for two there for as little as eleven dollars), slow-but-pleasant service, funky atmosphere, really good Mexican food. Make sure you get some of the cabbage salad -- I could eat that all day. Pokez is at 10th & E.

When are you headed our way? Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I didn't see this post til just now. I avoid the Gaslamp district, mostly...

Seaport Village is mostly touristy, but they have a *wonderful* little Greek place. Get the combo plate, share it, and you *might* have room for the honey custard dessert that's out of this world.

Higher-end:

Cafe Sevilla, on Fourth Avenue (555 is the address, if I remember right) is the best Spanish food in town (I lived in Spain, so I try Spanish restaurants when I can), and the lobster bisque, if it doesn't give you a butter-induced coronary, will make you see god. Yes, I'm an atheist, but still.

Bandar, also on Fourth, is yummy Persian food for mid-range prices. I really like their vegetarian combo. I wrote a review of it on sdnet.eats at some point. Let me see if I can find it:

Panda Inn (NOT Panda Express), at the top of Horton Plaza is lovely, clbutty Chinese food. They dip their fortune cookies in white chocolate, and I get scallops there every time because they do them to perfection.

You can also take the trolley down to the Mexican border, hop a cab to Avenida Revolucion for a few dollars, and have some really good Mexican food at any number of places, but be prepared for the poverty there to be heartbreaking.
