The stove edge sits on the counter by about 1/4" leaving almost an inch gap to the cabinet side on the one side and flush to the fridge on the other side. We had no other choice given the layout of our kitchen. Someday we may do a complete remodel but for now it's fine. The installation instructions said to cut a little notch out of the counter if it had a rolled edge. We did that then used the leg levellers so you can't even see the notch. We weren't too worried about the notch anyway as we plan to replace the counter top with ceramic tile. When we redo the countertop later this year, we'll move the stove over flush with the cabinet and use a small filler strip to give more distance between the fridge and stove. If your countertop doesn't have that rolled edge then all you really do is slide the unit in place so each side overhangs the counter than adjust the leg levellers. Our Admiral was a free standing range.
The killfile mythI wonder how many people actually use Killfile even though they say they do. I'll...
I can't advise on how long your model will last. My Admire was bought new in 1988 and still has a lot of life in it. Unless you really want a new stove or the one you have is no longer meeting your needs, then I would let it be. I really wanted and need a self cleaning oven, one reason for getting a new stove. It really was a fluke that we found a JennAir at the Sears Clearance Centre. and for the price! DH has always wanted one because his grandma and mom had one. He loved the idea of being able to grill indoors without having to brush snow off the bbq and the tabletop grill just filled the house with smoke. So we would have gone with JennAir anyway just not as likely so soon.
Now, your JennAir should just slide out without any problems providing the installers did not use any caulking under the rim. If it is caulked that would have to be loosened just as you would when you replace a sink. You slide a really thin blade underneath and pull up with just a little pressure. If done properly there should be no damage to the countertop. Before you try pulling it out check to make sure there is nothing anchoring it to the wall behind or the floor and disconnect the downdraft system. Replacement models should be the same width so you shouldn't have a problem that way.
