My 8-year-old son's 3rd grade clbutt has an auction every Wednesday. The kids can make something at home that is related to a book they've read, and then they auction it off to their clbuttmates. Usually they make bookmarks, dioramas, jewelry, etc.
Yesterday, my son came home with a large, ribbon-bedecked basket that contained a Gladware container of......stew. He paid $19 (of funny money) for it, and had to outbid several clbuttmates. One of the girls had read a book in which a vegetable stew figured prominently; the book included the recipe, so she made the stew.
The stew contains eggplant, tomatoes, carrots, green peppers, onions, potatoes, and green beans, and it smells wonderful. I will have to get that book out of the library to get the recipe (I think the book had an Egyptian theme?), because I'd love to know what those spices are.
We didn't eat the stew; kind of a disappointment to my son, but the stew had not been refrigerated all day yesterday. (We do know the girl and her family pretty well, so if the stew had been refrigerated, we would have tried it). I thought it was cute, though.
Chris OBEdibleFood: Dinner tonight -- garlic flank steak, Betty W. potatoes, steamed broccoli, roasted carrots, biscuits. Strawberry ice cream for dessert.
