Funny you should mention...after browsing this thread for the last couple of days, I wandered over to the Big Three's joint credit reporting website (googling Equifax, Esperian or Transunion will get you to the site) and to my horror, there appears to have been a Visa account created that had been "charged off" by the lending institution that I have never heard of. Having an account "charged off" prints "deadbeat" in big block letters on your credit history. It's not my account, I didn't apply for the card and I certainly wouldn't have left $488 outstanding for the last 4 years! I've sent letters to all 3 reporting companies *and* the Visa bank involved saying, "this isn't my account." It also has listed as open credit accounts that have long been satisfied and closed, which I so indicated. As a litigation paralegal married to a bankruptcy attorney, you'd think I'd know better.
