Darkening a roux based gravyWe don't often get exotic food stuffs in our two supermarkets in Nome (AK). So, yesterday, when turkey wings showed up in the meat case, I bought...
some people misread your statement, and think I'm really weird.
Darkening a roux based gravyRobert Lee There you are with all those caribou and you call turkey wings exotic?! I've eaten reindeer-caribou, but it's not on my list of...
thought they were anbreasthetical substances as most
There was always peanut butter in our house, and there's plenty of it on the supermarket shelves (Skippy made an appearance a few years ago, not sure if it's still there). No general dislike as far as I know. However, I don't think Australian peanut butters have as much sugar in them as US ones.I actually stopped buying the mainstream peanut butters which have oil, salt and sugar added to them, and now buy Sanitarium brand natural peanut butter (just peanuts, nothing else). My mum liked peanut butter and honey sandwiches, but "peanut butter and jelly" is something I only ever heard about on US tv shows. You find jams and conserves on the shelves here, rather than jelly - only really a few jellies, and they tend to be the ones used as condiments (like mint). There was a product marketed at kids called "Jelly Jam" - marketed as jam without the seeds! Don't think it's still available though. On hearing the word jelly, most Australians would probably think of the gelatine dessert - so, as a child, I did think peanut butter and jelly sandwiches sounded pretty
If you're looking for more things to buy from SimplyOz, and you like ginger, - try the Buderim Ginger Bears. They're like little gummi bears, but ginger flavoured - they're listed in their Ginger category. Really nice. Also, in their plain biscuits category try the Butternut Snap Cookies (which were always just called butternut biscuits when I was growing up!) They're a lovely biscuit. I made a double crust baked cheesecake the other week - the recipe used these to make the crust, along with chopped toasted hazelnuts. I took the cheesecake to work ,where it went in a hurry, and several people commented that they usually left the base on a cheesecake, but that they actually liked this one.
I'll have to look more through SimplyOz's site and let you know if I see
