Then you somehow ignore the obvious. What about the driver who always looks at the pbuttenger while talking? Oh yes, there's lots of those. My mother is one of them. It's gotten so bad I absolutely refuse to ride with her and insist upon driving whenever we travel together. I remember a drive down to Durango CO over this insanely high pbutt with no barriers on the outside lane (our lane). Everytime my mom would talk, she'd look and me and invariably start drifting towards the precipice. She'd always pause just in time and correct, but by time we reached Durango, I was a freakin' basket case in need of a few stiff drinks.
I've known others, too. We had a neighbor lady who would drive right up on the tail of the car in front of her at 70mph while always turning her attention to who ever she was talking to, in this case my ex. I only rode with her one time. Scared the livin' crap outta me.
The whole cell-phone issue is one of perception. It has yet to be proven conclusively that they have any more significant bearing on actual accident stats than any other distraction. And, don't bother claiming a "study" says otherwise. I just heard on the radio yesterday about a study claiming cell phones are way down on the list of distractions. BTW, I can't count all the drivers I've seen reading something while driving, including newspapers and books. Again! ...bad drivers are bad drivers.
