I used to represent GB in powerlifting so I know about intensive training. If you suddenly stop and don't modify your diet you will be likely to put on weight. Other than that I don't know of any problems from resting after intensive training but I have never really been completely physically inactive, even in rest periods I'd take part in recreational sports. I played rugby until last year when I ruptured my Achilles tendon and had 3 hours in surgery. Its just about OK now a year later and with a lot of exercise to rehabilitate it. In fact I used to sometimes rest 3 months after an intensive build up in my youth. Some people might have a problem psychologically with giving up. I'm about 10 pounds heavier now at 51 than when I was competing at 25. I'm not as strong partly due to injuries (though none of these injuries actually limits every day life, they just mean I bench press 125 rather than 160 kgs these days). I am less flexible and notably slower :-( There are really a lot of old wives tales about these things.
