I distrust such claims because they go against my (admittedly limited) personal records. I've found no real trend over the past 400 years (present generation excepted) in my families history and the number of subjects in my study exceeds those in academic studies that I've seen. It's difficult to find many subjects to check because the paper records don't link birth and rest and graveyard investigation tends to limit the numbers. My g'g'g'g'uncle Roger is not untypical except that he lived at the same address for at least 35 years (17 Back Leeming Street Preston) working as Dealer in Night Soil, labourer, labourer to bricklayer, and finally carter (age 70). My g'mother is pushing the limit being baptised the day after she was born as she wasn't expected to live (too small and she did only grow to 4 foot nothing) but worked as a weaver as a girl (age 12) and woman - and running a full complement of looms at that size and living through the 1920s and 30s in Lancashire is likely to equal many post-medieval hardships. She lived to the age of 90.

As did one or two of my lot in the 16th century.
