In the case of films the Hollywood companies own all the main outlets IIRC. Another factor is english language.

Good question. European goods *are* popular in many areas. Fashion for instance, cars (US cars struggle here with thier often naff styling although I'm sorry to see a few morons are now buying Humvees and other obsence 4x4 trucks, in Paris there is a tyre letting down campaign). Food at the higher end. Which may be the problem. The higher end buyer, politically aware and sophisticated is unlikely to be influenced towards the current US. However, the low end buyers are happy with McDogs, deep pan pizzas and Terminator 98. At a more fundamental level we need a less ambivilent atbreastude to Europe, the EU is IMHO doing a great job of not achieving that. At least the new bloke is having a rule scrapping campaign, but will that get through to the Sun reading "common people".There a good line in a Robert Elms Travalogue on tourist Spain "will thier new found sophistication rub off on us?" The answer seems to be no, as spanish youth adopt UK style binge drinking, but what can you expect? If you have a youth culture seperate from the rest of society, constantly told older peoples values are not cool, how can you expect it not to all go wrong?

I would love foreign language stuff, Spanish anyway, to improve. European film is generally so much better than the "man runs away from explosion" carboard character stuff Hollywood produces. Lowest common denominator is probably the sad answer. Cue more big brother.
