Mrs C is always using that expression. Can't imagine why, ahem.

We found it hard to use a local butcher before Christmas. Mrs C. went in specially to ask about a venison joint and was given a day to return. She went back on the day (15 mile round trip) and was told with a shrug of indifference that it hadn't come in, try tomorrow.
Christmas was getting close so we decided, next day, to try a local venison farm. The phone was permanently engaged so we paid a chance visit (20 mile round trip in opposite direction). They were advertising down the road from the farm but it turned out they were at market that day and the next - with nearly all the meat. So we pondered a big round trip to Boston or Stamford markets but decided we'd probably turn up just as they sold out of joints. So we went straight back to the first butcher as the only option left (big round trip) and got a joint at last.
It was a nice joint and we got some nice cheeses there - but it doesn't encourage supporting local shops. The first rule for local traders should be putting themselves out to offer reliable, friendly service. -- Phil C.
