We don't do 'tea'; I've got two cups and saucers for in-laws (last remnants of my tacky 1970s dinner service), everyone else gets a characterful mug. Years...

Well Sarah, having met you in real life, I would say you are very cultured but not in a la-de-dah sense and I admire you very much. I have to admit to not caring a hoot about cutlery, (my own cutlery is very good early 20th century stuff) although when we have friends round I do try and make the table look 'nice'. Several (ie many) years ago, when I was 17, as a raw articled clerk, I was taken on an audit by my lady boss, who was a typical spinster and seemed to hate young people. We went to a restaurant for lunch and I ordered tomato juice. I had never had tomato juice before. It came in a glbutt which stood in a small dish. There was a teaspoon in the dish. I poured the tomato juice from the glbutt into the dish and used the spoon as a soup spoon:( I saw her looking aghast but to give her her due, she didn't say anything. It was only when I arrived home and told my parents that I realised I had been a bit of an butt. Never mind! I am still here:) -- June Hughes
