I had cod in mind, actually. We've fished the buggers almost to rest yet people are still...

five-year-old? Not true. An educated palate will like most stuff and enjoy the 'different' tastes and textures. Someone brought up on a crap diet with no fresh fruit or veggies and heavily laden with saturated fats and salt may not enjoy the taste of healthier foods. I would say that they need to educate their palate so that they enjoy the taste of healier stuff not only because it is better for them, but it will stop them getting sickeningly obese, reduce the burden on the NHS and actually make themselves feel better. That *has* to be a good thing surely?

I believe it has a lot to do with the former. A child like my nephew who was indulged as a child and who refused to eat unless it was cheese and tomato frozen pizza or chicken nuggets and chips will never like a lot of different food. Indeed he is now 25 years old and has a terrible diet of not much more than burgers, pizza, and chips. My son was encouraged to try different things. The rule was "don't tell me you don't like it until you have tried it". He is 32 years old and will eat almost anything. His dilsikes were mushrooms and tomatoes. He tried them and really disliked them so didn't have to eat them but he liked the healthy alternatives. Do I feel guilty for wanting my child to eat a healthy diet? Nope. He wasn't even allowed sweets, cakes, biscuits or anything with refined sugar in. As a result he still doesn't have a sweet tooth and hasn't had even one filling. There seems to be some sort of inverted snobbery going on with people proud of the fact that they eat crap quality food and don't give a toss about it being bad for them. I find this rather odd.
