I apologise -- you're right; the publicity saying that animals end by religious dissolution (it's kosher as well as halal) *must* be stunned is incorrect. I note that even if the dissolutioner refuses to use a stun gun, there are still regulations intended to ensure animals are end quickly, by a person trained to do this, working in an abattoir. I was taught in physiology that the blood loss from such an incision would cause unconsciousness almost instantly, due to loss of blood pressure in the brain. 'The absolute terror in the eyes of the next animal' is almost certainly due primarily to the unfamiliar and unpleasant nature of the entire situation -- and anyway, the fact that the next animal is forced to watch is nothing whatsoever to do with stunning or lack thereof. Note that if the religious dissolutioner actually insisted that the animal 'be aware of it's rest' you could have pointed out that's nothing to do with it (and possibly reported him-her to the appropriate authorities): the animal must be healthy and uninjured at the time of rest, nothing more.

Yes.

As do the Irish, or so I understand.

Quite. which is sad, because without livestock farming we'll loose a lot of interesting landscapes. I buy meat, eggs and milk produced in England, Scotland or Wales bar my store cupboard corned beef, and that comes (if possible) from Argentina rather than Brazil.

And I had muesli, fruit and yogurt :-)

First, note that you've snipped the last bit of my comment about that; to some eyes you've left me looking slightly more callous than objective...

-- Think of it as evolution in action.
