The steam seems to bring out the cooking smells.

we're in a conservation area, so it's as well that we like them. Given the (environmental-economic) cost of heating the house, though, I think I'd choose something more effective if we could replace them. We can't possibly afford the hand-built double-glazed versions!

Our sash window locks are part-threaded pegs-pins. Drill a hole through the frame of the inside sash into (but not through) the frame of the outer sash, insert the screw-threaded socket into the hole in the inside sash, then the peg slides into the hole and screws home (if that makes sense). We've got them fitted to lock the windows shut, but I'd think you could fit them on the sides of the sashes to allow you to lock the windows part open. Mind you, ours are big 4-pane windows: if a burgler really wanted in, he'd simply kick a pane in.

It does, and we're not finished yet. Especially as he's hand-sanding the upstairs boards: they look fabulous when finished, much nicer than the ones downstairs that were ripped flat with a sander by the previous owner. Who then coated them with a nice thick layer of varnish that is now cracking off, so we're going to have to hire a sander and do them again. The upstairs floors have been finished with oil, then three coats of home-made beeswax polish (thanks, Mary!).

I will buy shares in Boots and Tisserand :-)

I find the geranium too, um, sweet.

Sarah, that's why cooks wear tunics and toques! Or part of it anyway. I wear jeans with...

Oh, yes. That hacking cough as the cat is propelled backwards...

I've got one, but I find my hand more effective (and the lavender smells nice). Ours are Maine Coons, and their hair is long, soft and incredibly adherent. The brush leaves a lot behind, admittedly straightened out and tidy.

Ah. That could well be the problem. I know about job queues -- I want power in the garage so I can try to make room for a freezer, but travel back up the work queue and it can't be done until we find a lot of money to move the electricity meter.

Better safe than sorry. I think there are ventilators that can be installed in window frames, things with a sliding cover -- I wonder if something like that would be helpful? Our kitchen has the old pantry airbrick in one corner as well as an extremely ill-fitting door. In cold weather I have to bolt it to make it fit the weatherseal.

regards sarah
