Those big stores are usually distant from the city, so you don't want to go that often. It's just plain cheaper, although food in general is much cheaper in the US than it is here in Italy. Typically, people I know would go to a big box store once a month, get large packs of stuff, and then go to the normal supermarket weekly to buy fresh things or things that don't store well. I went to a big box store my first day of my trip with a friend who shops for her household which includes a caregiver for her invalid husband and the caregiver's husband, son and many varied drop-in friends. She also entertains a good bit. She encourages all those hangers on because she wishes to keep the caregiver happy to continue the 21 year arrangement. I found the packages sickeningly large, but then I'd have to hire a barn to keep them in. The prices were impressively low. The place is confusing, loud and dangerous to the ankles, but I always thought that. I thought of it as an iconic American experience, so I increased it by eating a hotdog as my first American meal, making that two iconic experiences all in the first morning! --
